Gamified Wine Tasting
One of my favorite events to produce lately has been a blind tasting, but it's gamified. I call it “Frugal or Fancy,” and it requires zero knowledge to participate. Attendees compete as teams (wives vs. husbands) or as individuals. We taste six total wines - two sparkling, two red, and two white. I introduce the two wines and explain a bit about each without giving too much detail. Then, everyone writes down which wine they think is the fancy bottle (aka more expensive), and I reveal the answer. One point is awarded for each correct answer, and a prize of a bottle of wine is awarded to the winner(s).
Bottles are in paper bags and revealed after each set. Seeing how people are surprised or vindicated has been so much fun. Plus, blind tasting makes people refine their taste profiles and realize that you don’t have to drink expensive wine for it to taste good to you. Gamification initiates conversation, discussion, competition, and education about wines. It makes tasting wine an interactive and enjoyable experience without the snobbiness. Plus, it improves knowledge retention, so everyone walks away learning and remembering something new!
